Senior Underwriting Portfolio Analyst

Role Purpose

This role is within the Pricing & Analytics team and will help to support the provision of analysis to help monitor the underwriting performance of our portfolio. Business lines include and not limited to Mobile Telecommunication sector, Glasses, Hearing aids and credit cards.

The job holder will work within a team of 9 analysts. The role will involve mainly working with the European and Asia Pacific portfolios, but may also have some exposure to the Latin America portfolio. The successful candidate will have experience using the data manipulation tool, SAS.

Key Responsibilities

Production of monthly scheme underwriting performance reports using SAS and excel. Undertaking detailed variance analysis of the actual v expected plus trend analysis of key metrics such as Frequency and severity.  Monitoring of the overall Underwriting performance and where appropriate recommending actions to improve performance.  Communication of results in clear and concise manner.

Improve content of the reporting produced each month by writing SAS code and presenting within Excel. Recommend further areas for investigation based on analysis of these packs.  

Continuously look for ways to drive efficiency via the identification of process improvements or automating reoccurring tasks.

Chair monthly internal MI calls in order to share performance insights for allocated schemes whilst providing a forum for Claims, Account Management and Operations functions to comment on performance.

Production of the monthly underwriting bordereaux    

Supplying our internal and external stakeholders with accurate and insightful adhoc analysis through the utilisation of Excel, QlikView, SAS and other available tools.

Manage top line production from a financial reporting point of view. This includes the creation of booking schedules, carrying out the monthly premium bookings within the companys accounting system, monitoring financial reports to ensure bookings are accurate and liaising with credit control

Help to develop, maintain and improve account models to manage the top and bottom line performance of our portfolio.

Use of SAS to update monthly policy and claims data, including data cleansing and liaising with TPA`s to ensure data is accurate.

Help with creation of internal production forecasts utilising in depth knowledge of allocated schemes.


Knowledge & Experience

3-5 years or more of experience in the insurance industry, managing large datasets and able to manipulate through relevant tools. Ability to think logically, creatively and to work in a fast paced team.   Experience working with Excel at an advanced level and able to use and create code in SAS or a similar coding language. Candidate should be a self-starter and be able to take full ownership of assigned tasks.


Degree in numerical or science subject

Advanced Excel

Progression towards CII qualification advantageous

Regular use of software such as SAS, SQL or similar and will have a high level of numerical aptitude
