Job Description

The appoint will be either be at Associate Professor level, Grade: 9, Salary:£53,353 - £61,823 or the Assistant Professor level, Grade 8 - 7, Salary: £51,805 - £34,308.

The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of Heriot-Watt University is internationally renowned in actuarial science and financial risk, through the world-leading research activities of its Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics. The School is a partner of the Scottish Financial Risk Academy, founded in 2010 by a consortium led by Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh and comprising several member companies. The School is also a constituent part of the Maxwell Institute, an international centre of excellence, based in Edinburgh and which links us to the University of Edinburgh, covering the whole range of the mathematical sciences.

 

The Department has several strong research groups.  The Longevity, Mortality and Morbidity research team in the Department, led by Professor Andrew Cairns, has an established worldwide reputation in the development of statistical methods and models for the analysis and management of longevity, mortality and morbidity risks.  Other research groups are in sustainability and green finance, stochastic networks and data science.

Detailed Description

 

Are you an actuary looking for a change in direction and a different environment? Have you thought about sharing your actuarial knowledge and skills with the next generation of actuaries by lecturing at Heriot-Watt University?  In this role you will have the opportunity to use your industry experience and actuarial knowledge to help develop the actuaries of tomorrow.

 

Would you like to become part of a friendly, supportive environment?  We have a strong community with many actuaries on our staff.  We would support you to develop your teaching skills, whether you have teaching experience or not, to help you be confident in your teaching ability.  With several of our staff on part-time contracts, we welcome applications for both full-time and part-time working.

 

The Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics at Heriot-Watt University wishes to appoint at the level of an assistant professor or associate professor for teaching and related activities in actuarial mathematics.  You will teach a range of actuarial courses at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level. We particularly welcome applicants with experience in the field of life insurance. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Deliver high-quality teaching in actuarial mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

     

    Work successfully in global teaching teams while remaining physically located in Edinburgh, UK (there is no requirement to travel).

     

    Carry out such administrative and recruitment activities as may be required to achieve these aims.

     

    Provide pastoral support to students.

     

    Be responsible to the Head of Department for performing the activities listed above, at a standard that will maintain and enhance the Department’s reputation for excellence.

     

Education, Qualifications and Experience

 

We are looking for a Fellow or Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), or someone with an equivalent professional designation from another actuarial professional body, who has worked in industry.   You don’t have to have any prior teaching experience, but you should have an interest in teaching and communicating your professional actuarial experience to the next generation.

 

We particularly welcome applicants with experience of actuarial work in a life insurance company, actuarial consulting for such a company or similar experience in the life insurance sector, or alternatively with experience of teaching life insurance at SP2 level, either in a university or for ActEd or similar organisations.

 

Essential Criteria

 

  • Fellow or Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, or a similar designation from another actuarial professional body;

     

    Industry experience of actuarial work in a life insurance office, actuarial consulting for life insurance companies or comparable experience in the life insurance sector, or experience of teaching life insurance at the SP2 level in a university, ActEd or similar organisation.

     

    Be able to communicate effectively with students;

     

    Be able to develop familiarity and confidence with various strategies to promote and assess learning.

     

    Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.

     

Desirable Criteria

 

  • Potential to provide leadership in the planning, organisation and development of learning and teaching activities in the Department.
