Reporting Lines

The role typically reports to a Actuarial/Corporate Consulting Associate or Partner and involves working closely with all team members.

 

Responsibilities

The role is suitable for members of the actuarial team that are keen to pursue a consulting role and may include those working toward qualifying as an actuary with a view to ultimately working towards being a Scheme Actuary or Corporate Actuary. It may also include the role of a Team Leader, which involves working alongside others involved in Client Consulting, to ensure that all operational tasks within the team are conducted on a day to day basis and liaising with Partners to agree priorities.

Responsibilities will typically fall mainly under the Actuarial and Corporate Consulting Practice Areas, but can include others from time to time. The duties and responsibilities vary according to the needs of the Partners/Associates but may include:

  • Maintain a broad knowledge of current pensions issues
  • Explain technical pensions issues clearly in plain English (in both written and verbal communication)
  • Design and management of surveys and using statistical techniques in order to analyse and interpret the quantitative data collected
  • Use of a variety of techniques and theoretical principles to establish probability and risk in respect of areas such as pensions
  • Proactively advise clients on relevant developments in the pensions world
  • Act as the main contact for a range of clients
  • Manage a client team, ensure work is of a high quality and within agreed timescales
  • Assess the objectives and requirements of the organisation seeking advice
  • Assist Partners in managing client relationships, identifying any problems that arise (e.g. level of fees/ poor service) and helping resolve them as soon as possible
  • Provide advice to clients on how they might achieve their objectives while satisfying the requirements of relevant external parties (e.g. the Pensions Regulator)
  • Attend client meetings
  • Depending on client’s needs, there may be a secretarial element to work, including producing agendas and minutes for meetings
  • Check work of other team members, ensuring accuracy and compliance with scheme rules, procedures and legislation
  • Review draft client reports and advice
  • Work with Business consultants to lead technical elements of data analytic projects
  • When leading the corporate accounting appointment actively look for opportunities to support the company with other relevant BW services
  • Training and development of junior members of the team
  • Help less experienced team members with any queries
  • Peer review colleagues work where appropriate
  • Give external talks as and when required
  • Identify ways that the firm (including other practice areas) can help our clients and report new initiatives to either the Trustee or Corporate Consulting Board
  • Manage and develop marketing initiatives
  • Develop relationships with introducers and potential clients
  • Identify opportunities for new business
  • Assist in new business tenders, including participating in the pitch to the potential client

Experience and Qualifications

  • Ideally you will be well on your way towards qualification with the IFoA or will very recently have qualified
  • Actuarial experience within the pensions sector
  • IT skills to perform all aspects of work efficiently
  • High professionalism skills
  • Project management/time management skills
  • Good networking skills
  • Ability to take forward new ideas
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Suitable experience to lead the team in question and excellent team management skills (team leader role)
